About
"Wouldn't it be funny if I could get my job to pay for me to go to the Caribbean?"
To be completely honest with you, that's the question I asked myself before I designed my first study abroad course. I had just graduated with my PhD in African American Studies and was in my first full-time teaching position. I was half-kidding, at the time. As someone who teaches courses on Black history in the United States and the Caribbean, there are, of course, real reasons to travel for work. I was already planning to teach a class about women and slavery when I realized that taking students to Barbados— Britain's first and most significant slave society— would actually make a lot of sense for the course. That experience laid the foundation for what is now Diaspora Discoveries, LLC.
I launched this company in order to merge two of my favorite things: traveling and teaching. Diaspora Discoveries™ aims to help travelers get a better understanding of Black history and culture in different parts of the world. It also offers a way to share knowledge beyond a college classroom. Diaspora Discoveries™ allows you to learn about the past and lounge in the present, leading to the perfect balance of education and relaxation. I love a good vibe as much as the next person, so every Diaspora Discoveries™ trip encourages you to enjoy our tropical destination. Because there's more to the Caribbean than partying and beaches, I personally curate tours and lectures centered on Black people, as well as leisurely group outings, for a one-of-a-kind boutique experience. Diaspora Discoveries™ exclusively uses local vendors in keeping with my commitment to ethical tourism.
Everyone knows about the really detailed tours you can find in places like Italy, France, Germany, England, Belgium— I could go on. You catch my drift. But what about... us? What sets Diaspora Discoveries™ apart is that we foster that same appreciation for history and culture in Black countries. We center Black perspectives and build community among Black people, all while having fun in the sun. Everywhere has a history. I invite you to explore ours.
